Make Justice a Jewish Family Value

When Tivnu: Building Justice brings a group of families up a forest canyon to a hidden waterfall, we know the prize isn’t just the amazing view. It’s the value of making it there together, with the whole family.

The same is true of the kind of meaningful, hands-on tikkun ‘olam work your families will do here. And the same is true when they learn how to bring Jewish values to the fight for food, shelter, and dignity for all of our neighbors. We want to do those things with whole families together, doing meaningful work that every member of the family can be proud of.

Why a family program with Tivnu? We spend every day raising up strong, caring, sustainable communities. Throughout the year, our gap year participants work alongside local grassroots organizations. Bringing a group to Portland (or Philadelphia — see below) means your community’s families have the opportunity to do this same kind of work together. What’s more, they’ll have the chance to set these values as a foundational feature of their family life. Not by doom-scrolling and shouting at social media but by learning about society’s challenges on the ground, and discovering what they can do about those challenges as a family, together.

Our expert project leaders and educators make sure those are in fact family activities, engaging for parents (and grandparents) and older and younger kids at every experience level. We’ll build at tiny house villages for the homeless and harvest sustainably-grown vegetables for Portlanders who couldn’t otherwise access fresh produce.

We also live in the best city for unique, exciting family adventures. There’s that hike to Latourelle Falls, of course. And the world’s largest independent bookstore and the most spectacular game emporium, and live organ music at the 20,000-square-foot roller rink. Give us another day and we’ll go rafting, or explore the mountains or the coast. We’re not just more meaningful than a family trip to Disney — we are more fun!

We are now developing Tivnu programming in Philadelphia, too. If you’d like to bring your group to our democracy workshop in this fantastic city, or to our Portland program, please connect with Steve@tivnu.org today.
